The Fort Lauderdale airport is also known as the Hollywood international airport and is a commercial airport. It is just south of Fort Lauderdale conveniently located near the city of Hollywood, Florida. Last year alone the airport catered to over 20 million passengers with the numbers increasing every year. It has been one of the most utilized airports in history and caters to many different airlines including the Allegiant Air, JetBlue, and Caribbean Airways, not to mention the many domestic airlines it welcomes as well. The airport wasn’t always as well known and in fact was originally used by the U.S. Navy during World War II.
The Fort Lauderdale Airport was built on an abandoned golf course over 80 years ago now, in 1929, and opened as a small airport called Merle Fogg. The airport was later commissioned by the Navy and renamed Naval Air Station Fort Lauderdale. It was used for a variety of operations by the Navy until 1946 when it was once again it was closed. The airport was then renovated and renamed the Broward County International Airport, which it remained until another renovation was carried out in 1959 that which time it became the Fort Lauderdale- Hollywood international Airport. The airport has also been famous for a number of reasons, besides its popularity for location and services. It has also survived Hurricane Katrina and Wilma, which, while not doing any major damage, did experience broken windows and structural damage that needed repairing. The airport has also served as set for many popular films, the most famous of which was Revenge of the Nerds 2: Nerds in Paradise.
The Fort Lauderdale- Hollywood International Airport is one of the largest airports in the U.S and inside it isn’t simply a place for you to catch a flight. It has a large shopping center, a variety of venues for you to enjoy including several restaurants where you can grab a fast snack or sit down and enjoy a meal. There are also a variety of lounges where you can enjoy a cocktail as well as cafes where you can enjoy one of your favorite coffee or tea drinks.
A lot of attention was directed to building all the special amenities into constructing the airport facilities including convenient usage for all visitors through the airport terminals and parking garages in their efforts to ensure easy access, safety and to all travelers including children and those with disabilities.
The Fort Lauderdale airport also offers low airfare, despite the fact that they are one of the first airports to charge a user fee to the planes using their landing areas. It is a small fee and a move that, while catching on, is still fairly new and innovative and for the most part, unique to Fort Lauderdale. Whether this is responsible for some of the savings passed onto the consumer is not certain but either way from the consumer’s point of view, you’ll be able to travel at a discount when you use the Fort Lauderdale airport.
